Introduction
The spread of Web3 technologies has created the opportunity to develop various types of applications through which users can earn money, to the extent that there are users who supplement their income by using these applications or even make a living from it.
The best known family of applications is that of Play to Earn (P2E) games, but another significant area is that of Move to Earn (M2E) applications.
What are P2E games
P2E is a new component of the GameFi ecosystem. In fact, P2E games use blockchain technology, so it is possible to combine gaming with the advantages of cryptocurrencies. Traditional gaming allows participants to spend some free time playing and having fun. Crypto games, on the other hand, add a new dimension to the game, the possibility of earning money.
In essence, play-to-earn (P2E) games offer users the opportunity to win game assets that can then be sold to other users by getting paid in cryptocurrencies, thus monetising the effort produced to win game assets.
Normally, users play online games using applications or websites such as Minecraft and Roblox. In P2E games, however, it is essential to play on a blockchain to earn crypto tokens or non-fungible tokens (NFT). An example of a platform is Gala Games.
What are M2E Games
Move-to-earn combines moving, playing and earning cryptocurrencies on the blockchain.
Move-to-earn games are the new way to reward players with cryptocurrency just for working out. These games use technology to track players' movements so that they can earn money just by doing their normal fitness activities.
Move-to-earn boomed during the COVID-19 pandemic. People were mostly at home and spent their time in front of a screen. The need to move to protect one's health made M2E popular. In short, it is a new way of rewarding users who stay active and use technology. For every movement made, cryptocurrencies are earned.
It is plausible that over the years, this M2E trend will no longer be regarded as a form of gaming but will become an area outside of GameFi. This is because there is great interest in maintaining one's health, which is also evidenced by the high number of users of fitness apps in general. Users therefore are already accustomed to using technology while doing fitness or simply keeping track of their daily activities in terms of steps taken, calories burned, etc.
Examples of M2E games
Three examples of move-to-earn games are STEPN, Sweatcoin and MetaGym.
The move-to-earn sector is becoming increasingly broad and rich in applications. The best known example of M2E is probably STEPN (GMT), based on Solana.
STPN
STEPN is a lifestyle Web3 application with social-fi and game-fi elements. Players can earn money by walking, jogging or running outdoors.
To join the user community, players have to choose a pair of trainers that suits their fitness level (walker, jogger, runner and trainer) and can buy or rent them as NFT in the in-app marketplace.
Each type of sneaker can be customised according to many aspects: comfort, durability, efficiency, quality, luck, etc.
Once equipped with the shoes, the player can go outdoors with the GPS and begin his activity and earn GST (Green Satoshi Token), the in-game token, which can be used to level up and mint new trainers, repair them, etc.
Energy is required to earn GST. Each 1 Energy is equivalent to 5 minutes of movement and related gain.
Users' GST earnings are stored in the in-app Wallet.
STEPN does not require users to own NFT assets. In fact, they can rent NFTs for free from other users to start, and split the earnings later.
Sweatcoin
The second project is similar to the first: Sweatcoin. Users earn coins by running, walking and especially .... by sweating. For every 1000 steps taken, you get a reward in SWEAT, the platform's native currency.
With their slogan, 'Walking Pays', they want to reduce the billions in health care costs by making people healthier. Users can exchange earned rewards for products, make a donation or convert them into a currency of their choice.
Metagym
The latest example of M2E projects is MetaGym. MetaGym is easy to use and offers the possibility to earn money while moving via an app or smartwatch. Users can use GameFi, FitFi and SleepFi functions while in activity to earn MetaGym Coin (MGCN), the platform's token.
MetaGym aims to transform the world into a healthier place. Users earn cryptocurrencies by completing activities such as cardio or strength training or sleeping satisfactorily.
Conclusions
Like P2E, M2E is also gaining space on the scene. For those who struggle to get enough exercise, an income model could be the motivation they need, while others, who are already active, may find a source of income from an activity they do anyway. The move-to-earn concept is still in its infancy and it will be interesting to observe its development and success.
